Waikanae Butchery is owned by Terry and Maria McKee, who purchased the Butchery in January 2020.
Terry has an extensive background in the smallgoods butchery industry.
Terry’s passion is smallgoods and when he was younger Terry travelled to Germany to learn to make authentic genuine German smallgoods. When he returned to New Zealand he was employed by German, Heine Blum at Bells Continental.
Using what he learnt Terry was part of the gold medal winning team in the Devro Great NZ Sausage Competition crafting Beer Bratwurst which is a traditional German Sausage.
Whilst at Island Bay Butchery, Terry then continued his award-winning run at Island Bay where he won “Supreme Sausage” in the Devro NZ Sausage Competition for a Smoked Polish sausage.
Terry managed the Strathmore Butchery for many years before realising his dreams of owning his own butcher shop.
When not at work Terry is either with his family and loves gardening or dreaming about going hunting or fishing’.
Maria’s involvement in the butchery is in the office.
However, butchery is in her blood with her
Grandfather, George Herkt being a butcher in the 1940’s and provided a delivery service in his Clarence Bridge Cash Butchery vehicle. George Herkt’s great great Grandchildren now work after school in the Waikanae Butchery.
The butchery could not function without our wonderful knowledgeable hardworking staff.
Our staff are the cornerstone of our business, and we are so grateful that they are so fantastic, we could not open our shop without them. (However, we could not convince any of them to have a photo taken)
Just like Richard Branson, Terry uses his dyslexia thinking as an advantage.
